COSMOSCOW 2019

Even nowadays Art is understood by many as being the lot of the artisan, the sphere of medieval production. The intentional archaization of artworks is supported by the crude and old-fashioned idea of Art being a valuable acquisition, which in the spirit of competition one should be able to appropriate to the envy of others. The new generation seeks what is relevant, not the unique, not luxury goods, but ideas expressed with effect and vigour, such as visual slogans, vivid formulas of its worldview.

Edition art, among the diversity of which silkscreen printing stands out, responds aptly to today's cultural and economic circumstances. The leading artists of our time have embodied their creative genius in silkscreen printing. It is well-known that Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and other Pop artists used this technique widely. Even Leger and Picasso, and the fastidious Matisse, turned to silkscreen printing. Now it is an accessible and simple art form, tailored to modern tastes.

Silkscreen printing appeared along with Modern Art and is therefore its integral part. It bears the aesthetics of the Avant-garde: in which simplicity, brightness, improvisation, ephemerality and democracy merge.

There are still no collectors of silkscreen printing, no specialised galleries or museums. But who could have imagined, say, 10 years ago, that the most prominent Russian museums would become interested in installations and video art. Silkscreen printing has simply been waiting its turn.

JART Gallery already has a collection of museum level works, as well as prints by contemporary artists who, having become enamoured with this technique, surprise one with the diversity of silkscreen printing. Irina Korina, Pavel Otdelnov, MishMash, Dmitry Gutov, Sergey Shekhovtsov will be shown alongside the pioneers of this technique – Ilya Kabakov, Komar and Melamid, Victor Pivovarov, Mikhail Roginsky and other recognised artists.
The presentation of the Museum's Collection will be held at COSMOSCOW 2019, the JART Gallery stand created by Irina Korina and Ilya Voznesensky. The authors of the stand concept will demonstrate the intricate technique of making a silkscreen print run: the visitor at the stand will have the chance to be involved in this unique process led by the author-artist.

A separate part of the programme is the non-stop "improvised" performance, by the artist Vikenti Nilin, – the manufacture and sale of silkscreen text art t-shirts.
